“Have you no architecture of your own?”, was the remark by a Russian delegation in 1951 that triggered the making of the city’s legislature building and showcasing Indian architecture at its best.
Vidhana Soudha, the state’s legislature building, is the pride of Bangalore, Karnataka and India. Constructed during 1952-56 at the initiative of the then chief minister Kengal Hanumathiah, the magnificent building is an architectural marvel. Its grand staircase is grander than that of London’s Viceregal Palace, and its various facades reflect the splendour of Indian craftsmanship from Rajasthan’s palaces to south India’s temples. Built at a modest Rs.175 lakhs, the stone building is a monument to Hanumanthiah’s vision.
