The exhibition Contemporary Picture Book Illustration in Germany offers an intriguing insight into the work of 13 well-known German illustrators viewed from their individual perspectives. Children's book illustration in Germany is known for its great diversity, one of the features that has contributed to its growing success and recognition on an international scale.

The exhibition displays the high quality and astounding diversity of German children's book illustration. From water colour and collage to digital experiments, the selected artists cover a wide spectrum of contemporary illustrational art. Sometimes naive, sometimes sceptical, sometimes cheeky. Some artists play with imaginative words and images taken from dreams, others distort reality in a cheerful and comical way. Expressive images with strong colours stand opposite more muted and subtle illustrations.

There will be a Panel Discussion, in collaboration with the publishing house Tulika, with participation by well-known illustrators and designers:

Nina Sabnani is an illustrator, animator and film-maker, and currently an Associate Professor at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay, where she teaches animation and illustration. Her books with Tulika include Mukand and Riaz, which is based on her internationally acclaimed animation film which has won several national and international awards. Nina has also published Home, Best Friends and All About Nothing with Tulika, apart from illustrating several other titles. Currently she is completing her doctoral thesis on storytelling.

Manjula Padmanabhan writes books and stories, draws cartoons and holds exhibitions. Her long-running cartoon strip Suki was turned into a book, and Harvest, her fifth play, won the high profile 1997 Onassis Award for an Original Play in Greece, the first from India ever to receive this international honour. She has illustrated over twenty books for children, which include her own two novels for children - Mouse Attack! and Mouse Invaders - and Tulika's I am Different, Same and Different and Where's That Cat?

Deeya Nayar is a senior editor at Tulika. She is fascinated by language and its nuances, enjoys working in a multilingual environment, and translates into both Hindi and Bangla. She is a key member of the editorial team at Tulika that has raised the bar for standards in the development and production of mainstream children's books in India, in English and other languages. She lives in Chennai.

Workshop: The Language Department at the Bhavan will organise a workshop for German teachers on this theme. Details to be announced.
