Kidchen’s Summer Camp Instills Children with the Love of Learning through Food

Bangalore-based cooking studio, Kidchen teaches unique concepts across art, science, math and literature through food this summer

Summer Kidchen, which will run from April 3 to May 28, explores different themes such as art, science, storytelling, and travel through creative and age-appropriate recipes. This program is designed to empower children with hands-on experience in the kitchen. This course equips several cooking techniques such as chopping, kneading, mixing, colouring, baking and much more.

Each week will follow a different theme with a tailor-made curriculum. For example: during Science Week, children will not only bake bread but will also learn the chemistry of baking and how the ingredients come together to make the loaf fluffy and delicious. At Storytelling Week, children will learn to cook dishes inspired by their favourite books. Some of recipes include scones and jam from Enid Blyton books as well as ‘Golden Snitch Cake Pops’ inspired by the Harry Potter series.

“Food is something that is going to be a part of our lives no matter the future, and with Kidchen we hope to nurture a healthy relationship between food and the next generation," says Sanaa A’esha, Founder of Kidchen.

Sanaa founded Kidchen in 2016 when she realised that good food, something that adults could not stop indulging in, was often scoffed at by children who needed to be forced, tricked and bribed into eating. Watching her own son enjoy his way around the kitchen, prepping creative meals such as Dinosaur Dosa and Bunny Rabbit Buns, she decided to teach children to cook recipes they could identify with beautiful, fresh ingredients. This has led to a sessions where kids have chomped down Spinach Chips they baked themselves, chocolate cups they moulded around balloons (that they popped first) and made ice-cream in a flash, thanks to some ice and two ziplock bags.

Kidchen believes in the philosophy that kids who learn to cook with honest flavours, fresh ingredients and good food tend to shed pre-conceived notions that lead to fussy eating and learn to describe flavours beyond ‘Yucky’ and ‘Yummy’. However, Kidchen is not a culinary school to prime the next Junior MasterChef. It is an extra-curricular activity centre that helps children discover their love for good food and teaches them valuable life skills that will see them through for life.

At Kidchen’s new studio space in Indiranagar, children will learn a lot of beautiful food and life skills this summer. They will discover their love for food, learn to cook with beautiful, seasonal ingredients and will get to watch vegetables grow and learn which leaves are ‘eatable’. Most importantly, they will get to have fun, make a mess, lick their fingers as well as learn that good food and good-for-you food can be one and the same.

Dates: April 3 – May 28

Age Groups: 3-6 and 7-10

Timings: 9am – 12noon for 3-6 year olds; 1pm – 4pm for 7-10 year olds

Fee Structure: Rs 600 per day; Rs 2,500 per week, Rs 8,000 for 4 weeks, Rs 15,000 for 8 weeks; Early bird discount 10%
